Southern Oregon Smoked Salmon Festival
The Southern Oregon Smoked Salmon Festival is held in the heart of Southern Oregon Wine Country and features local music, wine, beer, food and a smoked salmon competition. We look forward to providing you and your family a top-notch event that celebrates the popularity of smoking salmon in the Rogue Valley. Partnering with leading local culinary personalities, we will bring a spotlight to the craft of smoking salmon in a judged and recorded event. The winner will receive a $1000 cash prize and awarded the distinction of the best-smoked salmon in Southern Oregon. The SOSSF is a child-friendly event and admission is free to all children under the age of 21 accompanied by an adult with a general admission/competitor ticket. There will be a paper airplane & hula hoop contest for the kids.
SMOKED SALMON COMPETITION RULES:
All competitors will be required to bring 3 pounds of their smoked salmon. Judges will be sampling approximately 3 ounces of their goods. The remainder will be available to sample for everyone (as long as it lasts) who purchased a general admission ticket + they can vote for the peoples choice award.
We understand that some seasoned salmon smokers take several days or more before their product is ready – which is why there will be no smoking on site as this is a one-day event.
Each competitor must provide photo documentation of their smoking process by submitting 3 photos, with the person entering the contest included in the photo, via email to firstname.lastname@example.org. The photo submitted will be verified by a photo ID you provide at the event before accepting an award.
- Each entry must be vacuum sealed or in an airtight container and the label must reflect the following:
- Weight of portion
- Date prepared
- Name, address & phone number
Each Competitor must bring a minimum of 3 pounds of smoked salmon for judging. Each entry must remain in the packaging until the date of the event. Packages will be opened by the event staff at the judge’s tent and assigned a number to ensure a blind tasting. About 3-ounce portions will be served by the staff to the contest judges who will then score the sample based on the categories below. Due to restrictions, no portion judged can be larger than 4 ounces.
ENTRIES WILL BE JUDGED BY THE FOLLOWING:
- Appearance 1-10 (10 being the highest score)
- Aroma 1-20
- Smoke Character 1-20
- Texture 1-20
- Taste – 1-30
All entry forms must be completed and returned to the SOSSF P.O. Box 1252 Jacksonville, Oregon 97530 no later than September 15, 2015. $30.00 entry fee should be included with entry form unless paying online. Checks should be made payable to Green Peak Holdings, LLC. If the entry fee is not received by September 15th, you will not be allowed to enter the contest. Winners will be selected at the conclusion of the event, must be present to win and the cash prizes awarded at that time. You can also enter online at www.southernoregonsmokedsalmonfest.com.
In the event of a tie, the sample with the most votes from the Peoples Choice Award will be declared the winner. Winners will be allowed free entry into next year’s competition, as well as have their picture and title on the SOSSF website for a period of 1 year.
